Nail surgery is recommended for patients with recurring ingrown toenails, subungual tumours or cysts, severely thickened or damaged nails, or nail conditions requiring a biopsy for accurate diagnosis. It is suitable for most adults following a pre-operative assessment.

The affected digit is numbed with a digital nerve block using local anaesthetic. The relevant nail or nail segment is then carefully removed using specialist instruments. If phenolisation is required to prevent regrowth, phenol acid is applied precisely to the nail matrix. The wound is dressed, and aftercare instructions are provided before you leave the clinic.

Pain and discomfort are resolved almost immediately following surgery. Wound healing typically takes 2 to 4 weeks with appropriate aftercare. Where nail regrowth is intended, a healthy nail will begin to emerge within 3 to 6 months. Phenolised areas do not regrow, providing a permanent correction.
